CONVERT LESS COMMON FILE FORMATS

Last Updated on Saturday, December 20, 2008

Sometimes I run into file formats that are not the most common among the "every day folks". Example: 3GPP2 Movie files. I never heard of that file format kind until I shot my 1st video on my Palm Treo 700p  "Smart Phone"... OK, bite your tongue -- I am inches away from my 1st iPhone...

Anwyway, so today, as I saw this ad for a TV show on my local NY1 TV Cable Channel, I had to preserve it for good old Time Capsule's sake. Now please, before you jump to any conclusions as to my political idealogies -- forget it!!! That's not what this is about, although this thought did cross my mind -- adults, like children, can be pretty honest and blunt...

In this example, former NYC Mayor, Ed Koch got himself a "soundbite" by making fun of Barbara Streisand... Again, please leave me out of the politics!!!

So, I stopped my TV Cable Box DVR (Digital Video Recorder), it's kind of like TiVo, and rewound it back a little. Then I recorded my TV screen, holding my Palm Treo 700p in my hand, but enough about Image Stabilization...:)! Then I renamed that movie on my Treo and did a HotSync to my Mac. Why renaming it on the Treo and not on Mac, because if I rename it on my Mac, the Treo will think that my Mac doesn't have that file yet, and will download it to my Mac again during the next HotSync. So, I just name it, if I don't forget, the way I like it on my Treo, and thus avoid duplicates... OK, back to the topic of this page:)!

So the file format of this movie was 3GPP2, as is always the case with the movies shot on Palm Treos, I assume... No problem -- I did my HotSync. Then I went to this website http://media-convert.com/ and uploaded it there to be Converted to a more popular format. Since I am a Mac fan, I converted it to a .mov file format that can be viewed with QuickTime. All Mac have QuickTime, and probably most Windows, but if not here it is -- a Free Download! So the result was that within a minute or 2 this 1.72 MB 3GPP2 file became 2.1MB .mov file, and I clicked on word Download at that site, and the file arrived on my Desktop in less than a minute (I am on Cable Connection)... Using my Dreamweaver 8, web design software, I Uploaded that movie onto this site... Now, I don't have to email it to friends... They can just click on this link and watch it. I was almost tempted to Upload it to my YouTube webpage, http://youtube.com/arkadymusic, but if the viewer doesn't click on More, and doesn't read this page, to put it in perspective, they might thik that I have something agains B_arbara S_treisand and it can get out of hand from there on... We all are entitled to our opinions, and, here in the USA, we are blessed to have enough freedom to express most of them.... Oops, let's stay away from the politics:)!

If you live outside of NYC, USA, check out NY1, In The Papers. It is a good, quick peephole glance at the local NYC newspaper headlines, as if you were walking by a newspaper stand. I've particularly enjoyed watching it when I travel outside of NYC.

Warning: I was not able to watch it in some hotels... That could be due  to some kind of Firewall issue within that hotel, or ISP provider -- that's my best guess, cause I was using my own laptop in that hotel.

Have fun! Hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by...
